Reuters Market News Nextel Says Won 475,000 New Subscribers Monday October 7, 11:01 am ET
SEVILLE, Spain (Reuters) - Nextel Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:NXTL - News), the fifth largest U.S wireless operator, said on Monday it signed more than 475,000 new subscribers in the third quarter and was on track to meet its goal of 2 million new clients this year due to solid demand from business customers.
"In the second quarter we added 471,000 new subscribers and in the third quarter it was 475,000 plus something," Chief Executive Tim Donahue told Reuters in an interview at a international technology Etre 2002 roundtable in Seville.
"We have a (U.S.) market share of about nine percent but in the third quarter our share of new subscribers will probably be well in excess of 20 percent," Donahue, who is also president of Nextel, said.
Nextel had around 9.6 million clients at the end of 2001.
