MURRAY HILL, N.J. -(Dow Jones)- Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - News) received an extension through the end of 2003 on a contract to provide Deutsche Telekom AG with optical transmission technology.

Financial terms weren't provided.

In a press release Monday, Lucent said equipment provided under the new contract will include its LambdaUnite MSS optical transport system and switch, as well as the latest generation of flexible SDH multiplexers. Deutsche Telekom also confirmed Lucent as a supplier of optical networking technology for Telekom's worldwide transmission network.

Under the previous two-year contract, received in 2000, Lucent supplied Deutsche Telekom with optical networking equipment.

Lucent representatives weren't immediately available early Monday for further details.

Reached later, a Lucent spokeswoman declined to provide specific financial information about the Deutsche Telekom renewal. However, she said, Lucent issued a press release in February 2000 that described the original pact as three years in length and worth "several hundred million Deutsche marks."

In trading Monday the dollar was trading at EUR1.02088 and EUR1.02088 was equal to DEM1.99667. The Deutsche mark is no longer the legal tender in Germany.
