The CBOE site has VIX data going back to Jan 1986.
The CBOE site has VXN data going back to Jan 1995
(but I think the early VXN data is calculated, instead of real historical data).

You can download a file that has the VIX data for 1986 - 2001,
and a separate file for VIX data for 2002 (the current year).

There are hot links for downloading the historical values for both VIX and VXN.

So Chip was wrong when he wrote <<the VIX was introduced in 1993 and so we're unable to compare its current readings with readings from prior market bottoms.>>
