Searle, I know that people in the US are lamenting their spoiled portfolios, but really, how many could have possibly gotten out at the top if they had wanted to without causing the collapse by doing so?

I don't know if you realize that the US has been in this dire strait before repeatedly. 1778--credit crunching debt and gross inflation of the fledgling currency from which the term "Ain't worth a Continental" comes from. 1864--severe inflation, massive war debt. 1919--US pays for much of WWI...debt. 1948...US pays for much of WWII and the rebuilding following...massive debt. 1968...US treasury raped by escalating war and Guns & Butter policy of Johnson. The Dukes of Hazzard run this place.
