The average life expectancy in the U.S. has gone from 47 to nearly 80 years in a century. This despite the fact that as a nation, we eat enough french fries, french toast, and Krispy Kremes to turn our arteries into licorice.

That advance in life span isn't free, unfortunately. Sure, there are excesses, but by and large the pharmaceutical and medical industries have helped make our lives better, not worse. If the same percentage increase in life expectancy were to continue for the next 100 years, the average person would live to be over 120.
