The SS system is based on life spans in the 1930's, I think, but with a modest adjustment about 10 or 15 years ago and maybe one before that. I have always advocated indexing the retirement age to life expectancy for SS purposes, so that benefits kick in for the last x percent of the average life span.

of course there may come a day when you can down a pharmaceutical after having ingested 2 big macs, large fries and 32 oz. coke...and miraculously the deleterious effects disappear

You mean a witches' brew of Botox and vitamin supplements won't do that??? Uh oh....
