Lucent signs $190 mln deal with wireless operator
Tuesday October 8, 9:28 am ET

MURRAY HILL, N.J., Oct 8 (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - News) said Tuesday it signed a two-year, $190 million contract extension to supply wireless operator MetroPCS with next-generation wireless equipment.

Murray Hill, New Jersey-based Lucent said the deal, which runs through December 2004, is an extension of a contract originally signed in the summer of 2001. Lucent will exclusively supply third-generation (3G) equipment for Dallas-based MetroPCS, which offers wireless service in San Francisco and Sacramento, California; Atlanta; and Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Lucent said it will continue to provide MetroPCS with 3G CDMA2000 1X equipment, which allows the privately held wireless operator to offer voice services and high-speed data services, including secure mobile access to corporate applications such as e-mail and intranets, at speeds up to almost 10 times faster than what is available on second-generation networks.

Lucent said it also will continue to supply its CDMA2000 base stations and mobile switching centers to MetroPCS, as well as installation and other services.
