If the parent has a dozen children, numerous grandchildren, plenty of people to comfort him in old age, and the child is suffering from Down's syndrome, and is thus a partial burden and will not live a full life, nevertheless, most parents would take heroic measures to save the child. Because the child is their responsibility. Period.
