Yes, society acts out, or reinforces, its values through things like blame and punishment. However, we could just as easily learn to be cagey and not get caught, as internalize the value, if it were not that we are value- bearing beings, and hungry to learn discernment. As I said, define self- interest as one's existential interest in being a value- bearing being, and we have little problem, even though I think the term is misleading.......
