We won't lose any allies over Iraq, and will gain at least one new one.

I thing we would lose the support of most of the Western world. On top of that, we would give one more reason to our enemies to be more obstinate in their pursuit of our destruction.

The last thing one wants in a conflict is an obdurate enemy. While it is disingenuous to believe that hard line Muslims will turn around and start loving the US if only we did one thing or the other, it is also equally obtuse to believe that our actions do not create long term grievances. Many of these grievances could have been avoided, for example was there any reason why we replaced left-leaning regimes with governments lead by generals with homicidal tendencies?
