RE: just as he wouldn't have squandered the surplus. The surplus never was. The 1990's saw the largest peacetime run-up of national debt in the history of our nation. The total US debt grew twice as fast as the economy. The entire 1990's boom was debt driven, and the the debt was very unproductive. It will take a few years for this problem to correct itself, and there is nothing that any president can do after the fact. mwhodges.home.att.net
