When I got home last night, my wife was watching the TWA crash info on MSNBC. I picked up the WSJ from a few days ago and read the article on CityScape, a MSFT web venture that reportedly has every newspaper in the country scared.

On the software front there's just no comparison. I can't believe all of these people considering the 10th digit of precision on some function, because technical economists need it. This is about market share, and they kick butt!

They have the best marketing, no? I'm in the computer industry, and read a lot. Everyone is jealous of their ability to grab mindshare. So what if some of it is pre-emptive or turns out to be wrong. Where's Larry Ellison's video database/server these days? It's about mind share!

This is the highest profile company in the high profile sector. Their financial and marketing muscle is unmatched. They wouldn't have all their successes without some flops (geez, did they have to name their biggest dog after me???) Jealous of their success - sure I am. Wish I had an MSDOS to pour a cool billion or so per year into the company (speaking of a few years ago now) with little R&D? Yeah. Wish I had bought stock 10, 5, even 2 years ago? Sure.

Long term - this has to be one of the surest things out there.

I read the Manes book on GATES a few years ago. Back in the early days, Bill opined that $10 million was the limit for MSFT. Couldn't do more. When they hit that, he said the $50 million was the absolute limit. I guess the sky is still the limit?

Bob.

(Now I put on my fireproof suit and prepare for the flames!)
