The US policy that the polled Arabs are referring to (not myself) seems to be twofold:
- America's unwavering support for Israel in everything
- Other policies (such as the trading embargo on Iraq) that they blame for the suffering in the region

On the first point, I agree with them that the US is overdoing the support to Israel a little, turning a blind eye at times to certain Israeli policies that they should not be supporting. The current administration of Israel has unconditional support of the US behind them, and they know it. The result is an oppression os unprecedented degree in the only occupation that remains by a democratic state on this planet, which unfortunately fuels the rage of the Palestinians and leads to more suicide bombings.

On the second point, I feel it is unfair to blame the US for the suffering in the region, most of which could be attributed to the policies of their own leaders. Still, they need an enemy, and America is there. If your little kid dies because he cannot get an antibiotic that cannot be imported due to the embargo, you might also blame "America the Devil" rather than go deep enough to uncover what your own leader could have done to avoid the embargo. Basic human psychology at work.

What I am trying to say is that it is not true that the reason for which the Arab world so hates America is because it is "the land of the free". I am sure it is there as one of the smaller components of the hate machine, but there are other, far more real-life reasons.
