I'm not comfortable with this concept. It seems that once one gets others to bend to their will, then a pattern of domination over others becomes so ingrained as to be irresistible. Why not continue until everyone is a Christian? It's good for them (if you believe the tenets of the religion).

The idea of self-determination is fundamental to the American tradition. We don't subscribe to external determination (even when we think we know better). If this is now our policy it puts us at odds with the majority of the governments of the world.

Even some of our allies probably don't have our level of self-determination, protection by a constitution or other artifacts of American representative government. Do we tolerate constitutional monarchies but depose authoritarian ones? If so, why is Saudi Arabia our ally? Is equal protection under the law the law of the land? Then why are there no criminals in the Enron case, but we heard about Whitewater until we are blue in the face? We should lead by example and not by military force.
