The problem with the US is that it does not recognize the importance of the rest of the world except in a manner that is becoming increasingly arrogant.

I don't think this is true at all. It is true that the US does not agree with "the rest of the world" about everything, but it's impossible to do so.

For example, the US cannot simultaneously agree with Israel and the Arab League about Palestine.

The US cannot simultaneously agree with India and Pakistan about Kashmir.

The US cannot simultaneously agree with China and Taiwan about Taiwan's future.

One of the recent unpopular US stands was refusal to sign the Kyoto Accord, which would have disproportionately punished Americans economially without doing much, if anything, to improve the climate.

Another recent unpopular US stand is missile defense, which harms no one but benefits us, and will benefit our allies.

No, I don't think the US is arrogant at all. I think it's arrogant for "the rest of the world" to expect us to dance to all their tunes simultaneously, to our detriment.
