If one opts not to learn, in the self-interest scheme, then one is either not as as enlightened as you or I, or he simply sees his self-interest elsewhere. He is entitled to the latter--it's his decision.
One cannot make an informed decision about much of anything unless one has a modicum of knowledge. Additionally, the true ignoramus is at risk of becoming a ward of the state, or a parasite on his family. Finally, how can one be a good citizen without some idea of politics, government, geography, history,and even math (in evaluating statistics, for example).
