I think that the teachers who made the most impact on me were the one's I respected the most, whether they were particularly kind or not, and whose good opinion I was loathe to lose. Of course, often they were kind, but that only reinforced my determination not to let them down. That is the sort of stick I most have in mind, loathing to disappoint someone you like and respect. That is how I got my son to work hard. He couldn't stand letting me down. The flip side, of course, is that when one does something exceptional, one basks in the praise......
