As for your observation that 20% of the signs at today's peace rallies are anti-semitic, you are reaching, Nadine. No one has statistics like those, at least not seriously.

No, John, I'm not reaching, I have seen those signs with my own eyes! And I have read many other accounts from others who say the same. I remember this article (now only the first paragraphs are free) written by a very liberal Jewish critic of Sharon's policies, very unhappy about the company he was now forced to keep:

salon.com

Not to mention the cases at SFSU and Concordia where pro-Palestinian demonstration devolved into anti-Israel riots.

The issue now is that the right thinks they have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to delegitimize the left by painting it as unpatriotic right after 9-11 and now by painting it as anti-semitic because folk are critical of Sharon's policies.

The sad and sorry fact is that the Left is doing this to itself without the assistance of the Right. The shrill cries of "Blame America first!" and "Zionism = Nazism" (yes, I've seen those signs too) are not only destroying the Left's chance for gaining middle of the road supporters, but are driving away some of the strongest Liberal Left voices, leaving the room to the lunatic Chomskyite fringe. It was not John Ashcroft who made Christopher Hitchens quit The Nation.
