GM anecdote - I just got off the phone with the local GM dealership where I leased my wife's dinky little get-around-town 2000 Sunfire 3 years ago.

I've been paying $218/mo pre-tax on a 36 month lease which expires November 6, so I had put a call into the dealership for a renewal, fully expecting I'd be driving away in a 2003 Sunfire for no more than the same payment, maybe even less.

Guess what, despite comatose interest rates, no inflation, and GM looking into the abyss on car sales going forward, Buddy at the dealership tells me it will cost $347/mo for my new edition of the same crappy little Sunfire. Over my dead body.

Ford may be looking good here after all if GM is sending all their customers down the street like this
