I agree with the premise that ATM will survive in the WAN ... primarily because telcos are today deploying ATM infrastructures and preparing to deliver ATM interfaces to customers.

Gigabit will survive (and take off) in the LAN backbone ... it is similar enough to existing technologies like ethernet to make the purchase decision a no brainer.

As for QoS, ATM has never delivered on this promise, and Gigabit ethernet vendors (such as Extreme) are delivering real QoS over ethernet.
