"While there are valid considerations for extended trading, incomes ... under current market conditions have not been commensurate to cover the incremental costs of operations in the afternoon in spite of measures taken to reduce and alleviate costs," the exchange said in a statement Thursday.

The exchange also cited "the bearish outlook in global markets," as a reason for the suspension.

Beginning October 15, trading will evert to its old schedule with trading hours between 9:00 am and 12:10 pm (0100 GMT-0410 GMT), the exchange said.

The exchange said it would continue to look for ways of lowering trading costs in the afternoon but did not say if it was likely to resume afternoon trading.

The Philippines market has been in a slump in recent weeks, hitting an 11-month low on Tuesday.
