Mike,

When looking at the recent random shootings in the Washington suburbs, one of the first questions that necessarily comes to my mind is cui bono? or "Who Benefits?".

Clearly, a police state apparatus that wants to control the general populace would be the first candidate to consider. Plans for such attacks and the attendant publicity blizzard and call for increased budgets for police apparatus have been discussed by certain elements of the government over time. A prime example of the government planning such terrorist incidents in order to control the populace is the Operation Northwoods scheme:

One also must consider the way that terrorization of the populace was used in Nazi Germany in the mid-1930's as a means to consolidate the power of the Hitler organization.

The question needs to be raised -- is our government capable of covet operations aimed at furthering the agenda of an unaccountable and anti-democratic elite? The answer is clearly "yes". We've seen a long history of covert operations being carried out by the rogue elements of our government. In the past, this has generally been in other countries. Unfortunately, today it appears that the domestic population is the target of the state terrorists within our "own" government working to move the U.S. in the direction of a totalitarian police state.
