On the oil argument, keep in mind that not just the US but Japan and Europe, our major trading partners, need Middle Eastern oil.

Exactly right. The phrase is "the dependence of the global economy on oil."

As for other fuel sources, not as long as your friends are in the WH. Noticed an article today that the Bush administration is working with the auto industry to stop the California requirement for electrical cars. Turns out, and I should have known, Andy Card was a lobbyist for, among others, GM.
