Since no one denied that a competent adult has that right, it seemed inappropriate.

Perhaps I misunderstood. I'm glad you agree that a competent adult's preference for living fat, dumb, and happy is acceptable.

A belly full of sashimi always improves my disposition. Can't you tell. <g>

It had seemed to me that you were saying that I had no reason to think that I was particularly right...I called that "shallow" because I had very cogent reasons, which you ignored, to demonstrate that it was not all the same, and that some social interest was inevitable.

You have cogent reasons for your opinion. So do I. It is not at all clear to me how my failure to give preference to your cogent reasons, to deem them "right," is shallow.

I have no problem with societal institutions promoting one thing over another

Neither do I. "Promoting" is by persuasion, by example, by enlightenment. Insisting on compliance under penalty of being shamed as "immoral" is something else--not something that would start with the letters "pro." Negative reinforcement is suitable for children who cannot yet reason and for those on whom society has given up. Negative reinforcement is just that--negative.
