In that example, the parties have a contractual relationship, a commitment, an understanding. Our disagreement has only been about what duty we have outside a contractual relationship.

You just made it a matter of freedom, which was beside the point.

Since when is freedom ever beside the point? The default is always that we are free to choose--until and unless something compelling overrides that. Society's interest in conformity is not compelling other than in emergency situations.

Perhaps you would say that tradition is the default... <g>
