Is CDMA success a global 'tsunami'?

Issue 18, 09 October 2002 Extract from report by Joe Locke, John Godfray and Mayur Nallamala - ABN AMRO
"CDMA technology's current and widening lead over GSM systems in the prenatal wireless data market should be seen as possibly one of the most acute threats to the global wireless sector at large. This is because it highlights the weakness of most systems in use which are GSM-based and the potential weakness of WCDMA systems, which are very much in the development and not implementation phase.

"Still, we believe it is too early to tell if this threat is a potential tsunami that will wreak havoc on the industry or merely a ripple in the broader ocean. Furthermore, given the size of the resources behind the existing GSM platform, we believe it is likely too early to write off either the GSM or WCDMA technologies. Were there a major meltdown within the GSM universe due to the need to upgrade rapidly to better data systems, it would ultimately be in the name of broadening the usage and the business case for wireless data services.

"However, if GSM obsolescence is closer than the market believes it is, any upside from higher data usage on replacement equipment may represent more of a silver lining than real upside from existing levels.

"The 1x CDMA technology demonstrated in South Korea is truly awesome.

The power of the platform is unlike anything the wireless industry has ever seen. The handset is no longer a simple device for voice communications as it is throughout most of the world, but is a multimedia platform in the truest sense of the word. It can sing. It can dance. It can interact with communications expression on a personal scale that almost lives up to the hype that wireless data once had."
