But if you look at Germany and how they lock the doors, I was told, on weekends and you get paid holidays AND months off rather than weeks, I think they live much better than we do and get more per hour worked too. Of course, not too much venture capital is invested in Germany.

All true...in the area I worked, the police even checked the parking lots occasionally to make sure nobody was working when they should not have been! Of course European unemployment has been terrible for years now so there is a price to be paid for all their social benefits:

I believe many unions are very short-sighted in trying to protect their jobs which eventually causes the companies they work for to become uncompetitive...and then everyone loses. A prime example is the major airlines...the pilots and mechanics unions are bankrupting the companies that have strong unions (AA, UA, US, etc). In a few years, the only airlines left standing will be following the model of Southwest, etc.
