Clinton was well-loved in Europe, as well. Europeans might not have "loved" every single American president but possibly none was as heartily loathed as W. Bush.

Clinton, who speaks so beautifully and who wrung his hands over the Al Qaeda menace, a menace he was well aware of. A President who was not confident or able enough to use American power, except too little too late or on behalf of some other power, not for the interests of the US. Small wonder they love him in Europe. If President Bush would also volunteer to self-emasculate American power, they would love him too.

Le Monde has had these attitudes for a long time. What has changed is that the American elite used to care what Le Monde thought. Not anymore, not after 9/11.
