Jeez, Louise!!

Oh, it's always possible, given the present state of US international power, to muscle folk into positions.

What do you think diplomacy is if not the avoidance of the use of force to achieve one's objectives?

...gather from that note that you think the Bush folk are doing the diplomacy bit well by ignoring it, by alienating traditional allies, by acting much like 7th graders with the Germans, by fulfilling the image of the international cowboy ever so eager to pull the trigger--a sort of shoot first, ask questions later style. Well, if you like that, consider that diplomacy well done, we don't have much to talk about.

No, they are playing a very skillful game by making sure everyone knows that we consider the US vital interests to be at stake, and that we intend to proceed to defend them regardless of any ruffled feathers. The Germans and the French presumably believe that their vital security interests are not involved. Why be diplomatic under the circumstances?

Don't be such a drama queen, John, it's not cowboys and Indians or 7th graders at all.
