There have been some reports in the media that shots have been taken at 600 yards (the phrase was 6 football fields). That is pretty much the max. kill range of a .223 and an unlikely success except under range conditions. MSNBC has reported that the rifle in question is either a Colt AR-15 (civilian version of M-16) or a Ruger Mini-14 (imagine an M1 Garand that was left in the drier too long). They are not that similar so I'm wondering how they come to these conclusions or are they just anxious to spout any certainty in this affair. I guess they view none of this is harmful to their over-all credibility.
