I agree. No serious shooter would pick a .223 for use at any but short distance. When the various possibilities are considered, I conclude that the most likely by far is that these shots are being fired from much shorter distances & the 600 yard estimates are flawed guesses by some reporter who barely knows which end of a rifle is which. Or if any shots were fired at that distance, strikes were just luck.
Also, imho the use of the .223 marks the shooter as a dilettante. It's a fine round for its purpose, but its purpose is Not sniping. If some nut was carving people up with a steak knife, we wouldn't call him a surgeon, eh? This shooter is a 'sniper' only in a very broad definition of the word. True, he has the sense to limit himself to single shots, but he still seems to me to a small caliber nut. (Pun intended)
--- When we see a real sniper with a .50 caliber sniping rifle or at least a .308 taking some really long shots & acting professional about his work, then there's reason for concern.
----This current spud is going to outfumble the cops before too long, imho, & when he does we'll see a garden variety nut. Not an evil monster or a terrorist.
