Stephen Ambrose died of Lung Cancer today, age 66. . . . . Too bad his reputation will be hurt by the plagarism.

I had no idea he was ill. Very sad. I don't think the alleged plagiarism rose to the level of plagiarism, I think it was a mistake in punctuation. He failed to put quotation marks around a quote, but cited the author. If he intended to steal the material, he would not have cited the author.

When you are on law review first year, you do what's called "sub and cite," checking references for substance and making sure the citation form is correct. Historians like Ambrose might consider hiring graduate students to do the same for them.

His real "crime" or "sin" was making a lot of money, writing very popular books, which were made into blockbuster movies.

One of my history professors called him "Steven Ambrose Inc." with a sneer, and was clearly obsessed with the fact that Ambrose was rich while he himself was still working, teaching at GMU after he had already retired from Berkeley because he couldn't live on his retirement.
