Its not very rare in other countries, although I will admit such things are more common here then in most rich countries. We also have more stabbings here then in most rich countries despite our easier access to guns. We just seem to be a more violent society, which is one of the reasons why there is greater need for guns to defend ourselves.

Tim, bad habits are easy to adopt. We are not different genetically from Europeans. However, we have endorsed a culture of violence by encouraging the use of weapons in our society. That culture of violence will not end until we give up the notions that guns can successfully coexist with us.

Its like three smokers living in the same house. Its very hard for one to quit when the other two are still smoking. However, when all three quit, it becomes much easier. Sure someone may still sneak out for a cigarette from time to time, but it becomes so unacceptable, they usually stop trying.

As for gun control stopping the sniper, its not likely. He is to determined to shoot people. The only criminal shootings it might have any serious effect on would be impulse shootings by people who where not criminals before the shooting. And such shootings really are not so common. Yes most murder victims are killed by someone they know but a lot of criminals know other criminals. Most domestic murders are preceded by a long history of domestic abuse before it escalates to murder. Its rare that a normally non violent person just snaps are starts killing.

You can listen to the argument of the NRA re guns. I have found their theory to be full of holes. Its been proven over and over that less guns in a society leads to less killings, less maiming and less crime. People who hold on to the need for guns are like the smoker of today who holds onto his cigarettes...........they are holding onto something that could very well kill them. And just like the non smoker who inhales the smoker's smoke, the need of the gun advocate may end up killing one of the rest of us.

This culture of violence....this need for guns puts us not much above the level of barbarians.
