And authorities began describing the serial sniper as not just a local threat, but an attempt to terrorize an already anxious nation.

Gee, nothing like elevating a local lunatic to that of a national terror. I can see if some guy is picking off people from city to city and state to state... but not someone who sticks close to home and takes the weekends off. If you want to avoid copycat killings, the *last* thing you want to do is attach some nationwide social importance to a deranged sniper.

The true test of any theory is the ability to make accurate predictions from it. For example, if the killings are all part of some sick game, then it follows in my mind, given their number of "successes" and the resulting media coverage, the rules are about to change.

I can imagine the duo sitting around discussing things:

Killer 1: So what's up for Monday?

Killer 2: The interstate's too risky.

Killer 1: How about driving west?

Killer 2: Nah, we got too many jobs to do Monday.

Killer 1: Something in-town then?

Killer 2: Sure. Maybe the mall?

Killer 1: OK. Maybe from the parking garage.

Killer 2: How about picking someone off sitting at his desk at work.

Killer 1: That's an idea.

Killer 2: Double or nothing.

Killer 1: You got it.
