Lucent Technologies to Demonstrate Seamless Roaming Between WiFi And 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Wireless Networks

MURRAY HILL, N.J., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - News) today announced plans to demonstrate seamless handoffs of wireless data calls from a "WiFi" or wireless local area network (WLAN) to a third-generation (3G) CDMA2000(TM) 1xEV-DO network in its booth (#2400) at the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) Wireless I.T. and Internet show, taking place Oct. 16-18 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas. The demonstrations will show laptop data calls being switched between these two types of wireless access networks with no interruption in service.

Lucent has developed this solution to help address the growing demand on the part of business users for uninterrupted high-speed data access by utilizing both 3G wide-area mobile networks, which offer ubiquitous geographic coverage, and WLANs, which offer high speeds but more limited coverage.

The demonstration will utilize Lucent's 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network equipment, a laptop equipped with a Sierra Wireless AirCard® -- a wide-area wireless PC Card, a Proxim ORINOCO® 802.11 WLAN card and ipUnplugged's Seamless Roaming Gateway solution. It also incorporates Mobile IP, a key standard established by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which enables seamless inter-technology handoffs between 802.11 and 3G technologies and is essential to maintaining "always-on" high-speed mobile Internet connections. This technique is made possible by a unique mobile network architecture developed by Bell Labs.

"We are excited to be able to demonstrate this capability, which has tremendous utility for mobile workers that need to access critical information while on the go using the fastest technology available," said John Marinho, vice president of offer management, Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group. "We are committed to helping mobile operators deliver secure 3G mobile data services such as this for the business marketplace."

There are also certain business segments that would find this capability useful. For instance, this technique would allow an IT field service engineer to begin downloading large files -- such as technical schematics -- from a wireless LAN at his dispatch center, and continue to receive this information while en-route to a service call, cutting response times substantially and making the travel time between locations more productive.

This 3G and WLAN seamless roaming capability is an integral element of Lucent's recently introduced portfolio of end-to-end wireless data solutions that will allow business customers to access essential applications -- such as e-mail, company databases and internal Web applications -- behind corporate firewalls via 3G CDMA2000 and UMTS wireless networks. Lucent's Secure Mobile Data Solutions for Enterprises portfolio will enable mobile professionals to use their laptop PCs or PDAs to access all the applications they normally use, with the same level of security and performance they typically enjoy in their office. The end-to-end offer also addresses the need for combined billing for services on the 802.11 WLAN and 3G networks, and simultaneous one-time provisioning of users on both types of networks.

Lucent also has demonstrated seamless roaming capabilities between WiFi and 3G UMTS wireless networks.
