Interesting -- but usually, that plain-vanilla veteran fails to maintain any interest in ballistics and firearms beyond his tour of duty.

Serious shooting and interest in ballistics, usually precedes military service. That interest often leads a recruit to volunteer for an elite, within-service, unit or group. What was learned is maintained well beyond discharge. One might suspect that that type individual would be apt to join into this discussion; and they can easily detect "John Wayne" quoting Ian Flemming.

Not to change the subject but -- I wonder if the sniper might not be intentionally drawing attention from something that's slipped off the radar screen? With the police dispersed to known locations, what areas are being left relatively unprotected?
