Gore Courts Iowans but They'll Wait on 2004

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) - Democrat Al Gore wrapped up his first visit in a year to the key caucus state of Iowa on Tuesday, hammering President Bush to the cheers of party activists who have taken a "wait and see" attitude on the 2004 presidential campaign.

Gore, who has promised to make a decision on another White House bid by the end of the year, won good reviews from skeptical Democrats for his appearances in Iowa on behalf of four congressional candidates. "He seems more relaxed -- he's not running for anything so he's comfortable," said Susan Salter of Mount Vernon, where Gore campaigned on behalf of Democratic House candidate Julie Thomas. "He's a likable guy, but unfortunately I don't think he came off that way in 2000."

Added Mary Logan, a retired legal secretary: "He seems new and improved."

Gore, who emerged from the political shadows in recent months after more than a year of hibernation following his bitter 2000 election defeat, ripped Bush's economic leadership and environmental policies in speeches across Iowa. .....

A NEW AND IMPROVED AL GORE.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
