Actually, there's always been a plan in place to fuel the growth of iHub. The stage we've been in since the beginning of the year and that I intended to stay with until at least the end of this year has been the "Build it and they will come" phase. It's been working well. Just keep adding features, speed, and reliability, and let word of mouth do the rest of the work. The rate hikes in subscription fees and the eventual end of our offering new lifetime memberships has been intended to dovetail with the ending of the "build it" phase. I didn't want to focus much on growth until the only revenue streams available were the recurring ones.

Getting terminated from SI for "promoting" iHub when I wasn't "promoting" the site anywhere (along with the really lame and false "employee account" thing) made me wish I'd really been promoting it. And made me re-assess just what stage it is that we're at.

I think it really is time to start promoting it. I love building it, and will continue to do so, but it really is quite "built" by now and I can focus less of my energies on that and more on growing it further.

Motivating me to start growing it ahead of schedule is the main "cost" to INSP that I was referring to earlier. They had a good 3-6 months of clear sailing before I'd work on this site being a real competitor to them in terms of size. Now they don't. They get aggressive; I get aggressive.

It really was time to start focusing more on growth anyway. Has been for a long time. I just get such a kick out of wearing the geek hat (propeller beanie) that I've been putting off duffing it in favor of the marketer's hat (devil's horns?).

Matt and I have started putting together the details of how we're going to grow the site now past the growth caused by word of mouth.

Oh, and Originaldpb, I emailed their advertising department yesterday about banner ads. The right hand and left hand weren't even aware of each other's existence at that company in the past, so it wouldn't surprise me if they'll sell me banner impressions. Heck, MotleyFool is a sizable advertiser there.
