He said that and Lou R. did a quick calculation and said some thing to the effect that it is only 5+% a year and Sir John said it is closer to 7%.

I think what Lou did was a pre-calculation. I calculated the 97-th root of 125 after he said that and it is indeed a little over 5% per year. What Templeton said was that he expected actual average annual returns to be closer to 7% for the rest of the century, so his estimate of a 1,000,000 DJIA is conservative.
