Operating earnings topped a Thomson First Call consensus estimate of 9 cents a share as well as the company's Aug. 29 guidance of 10 cents a share.

But revenue came in short of $233.1 million projected by First Call. In the August conference call, Chief Executive Richard Hill said a delay in two orders for advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment would make it impossible for the company to hit revenue targets for its third quarter. Hill said revenue would come in at $230 million, compared with the company's previous expectation of $250 million.
