For Afghanistan to succeed as a peaceful country, we will need to be there for years. That is to maintain the current government and allow for an elected successor of some type. We will also need to pay for peace--call it bribes for goodwill if you will. There needs to be immediate signs of economic progress in that country to keep the Taliban quiet and at bay. We will be there for 5 to 10 years and need to spend as much as it takes and it will take billions.

If we decide to overthrow Hussein, the proceeds from the oil fields can be used for rebuilding the country. We will have to tax the oil flow to recover our costs to "liberate" the Iraqis also. Of course there are some intermediate problems we need to deal with before we get to the rebuilding process. This too will take a commitment of years. If we don't have the stomach for it, we should not try because we will fail.
