Oh.. So that illuminated blueprint the monks spend so much time on really is a sacred document? My impression of the novel was that the author, while he may have had some feeling for the brothers (he also regarded some of them as hapless clowns at times, too) basically regarded religion as something that was an invention of man and not divinely inspired.
