His wisest character seems to be the Jewish man Benjamin. And I haven't seen a recurring character named Lazurus, and I'm almost done. I've met Francis- who finds the blueprint and venerates it along with his brothers, and then gets an arrow between the eyes. I've met Thon, the man of science. And I've seen the new great civilization rise, which will be eventually destroyed. Seems to me the message of the book is that humans are pretty much doomed to destroy themselves, endlessly, no matter what kind of mythology they have to define their lives.

Have you read this book recently?
I found it dark, and anti-religious, anti-science and anti-people. Very good book, but still, considering its pessimism I am surprised you liked it.
