As for a 'wider war', I have seen no sign that the US would get mixed up in the Israeli/Hizbullah/Syrian war, why should it?

It is not often we agree on many points concerning Mideast foreign policy, but I think this issue is pretty cut and dry. No sane American administration will ever get involved in an Israeli/Hizbullah/Syrian war. The only exception I can fathom is the very remote possibility that Israel is losing the war and her existence comes into question. Israel trumps the nuclear card and Uncle Sam reacts to prevent a Samson option.
