I've read the book several times, but the last time was probably ten years ago. But from my memory of it, I'd have to go with X: "anti-religious and anti-science".

Another point: I don't remember that that surviving religion was specified as Catholic. I don't recall that it was even made clear that it was Christian.

Most wise comments are placed in the mouths of monks.
Almst all the characters in the book are monks.

Have you read any James Blish? "A Case of Conscience"?
