Because I already know the material I can clearly see his pastiche technique in it - tending a lot towards secondary sources with a sort of cut and paste effect, but he draws together a lot of different material into a reasonably strong narrative.

Bill, my taste in history is for very well written books filled with original research. Robert Caro's biographies of LBJ are the essence of that; though E. P. Thompson on the English Working Class matches up very well; or Lawrence Stone on the English aristocracy. Thus, the techniques you talk about would certainly lead me to drop Ambrose's latest stuff. That's what my friends talked about.
