I think it would take years for the Taliban to return to power

You are probably right. We would have the thugs fighting it out first. Then the Taliban. Whether Mr. Bush thought it out or not, we committed ourselves to nation-building when we overthrew the Taliban. We must see it through as a country. If we do it right, perhaps it will pay additional benefits in that part of our world.

Then there's Mexico, which has a pretty abysmal human rights record as well......

This is a cruel world. However, it grows. I see you are a fan of Cornell's Legal Information Institute--a very fine service. Read the Slaughter House cases, then Plessy, then Korematsu, then Hirabayashi, then Adarand (1995) from the Supreme Court database. The United States has learned from its experiences as a people and a country. We have changed our most basic document to remedy our mistakes. Through it all, and in a less than straight path, we are moving towards enlightenment. Perhaps our world will too.

I see polls from the United Kingdom now show that the populace is more willing to support our beating Saddam to a pulp as a result of the terrorist attack in Bali. Do they see a direct link from Hussein to the terrorists that carried out that act? Or does 2 plus 2 equal 3 over there?
