North Korea Admits Secret Nuclear Weapons Program, CNN Says

Seoul, Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) -- North Korea said it has been developing nuclear weapons, violating a 1994 treaty in which it agreed to abandon the development of atomic arms, Cable News Network reported.
Officials in the Stalinist state disclosed the work to U.S. special envoy James Kelly during a visit to North Korea earlier this month, CNN reported, citing Kelly's briefing to the Bush administration. North Korea has enough plutonium to build two nuclear devices, the report said.
Under a 1994 accord negotiated by U.S. President Bill Clinton, the U.S., Japan and South Korea agreed to build two so- called light-water nuclear reactors for North Korea on condition the nation abandon its nuclear arms program.
The U.S. has about 37,000 troops stationed in South Korea. U.S. President George W. Bush earlier this year described North Korea as part of an ``axis of evil,'' along with Iran and Iraq, for what he called a pursuit of mass-destruction weapons.
The report helped push down South Korean stocks. The benchmark Kospi fell as much as 2.1 percent to 298,500.
