It was the M1! It was loaded from the top, and would take your thumb off if you did not do it right. For those that did not, they got to live with M1 thumb!! It did have a wood stock, and weighed almost 12 pounds fully loaded. It was quite a beast to march and practice with. I shot expert with that one, but do not know how. The M16 was not available until arriving in country. Interesting what memory does. First time that I have read where you are opening up. Good going.
