| Yesterday, the president signed the legislation which gave him broad authority to engage in hostilities with Iraq. Now, the Democratic leadership, for the most part, as well as most members of the caucus, supported this bill. Unless one believes that they are just that venal, that principle means nothing to them, how are we to construe this turn of events? As far as I can see, it means that there is very little dispute over the direness of the threat Saddam constitutes, and that the whole debate mainly turned on whether to take the multi- lateral route and the utility of inspections. Which is to say that the Administration, at least in closed intelligence briefings, has indeed made its case that Saddam has to be dealt with, and the only question was how soon and with what ferocity?...... |
